Vehicle Requirements

Entrants can either enter an Odyssey car or 4WD support vehicle or both.

All Odyssey entrant vehicles must be built prior to June 1985 and mechanically sound. For more information on vehicle preparation refer to the The Mongrel's Guide and Toughen it up

The role of the 4WD vehicles is to act as a support for the Odyssey vehicles. The support vehicles follow the same route as the Odyssey vehicles and assist with duties such as towing etc while being included in all the fun activities on the event.

(Note: It is not compulsory to enter a support vehicle with your Odyssey vehicle and you can enter a support vehicle without entering an Odyssey vehicle.)

End Destination

Every year the Odyssey ends at an exotic destination with the final presentation dinner at a 5 star location such as the Sheraton Mirage (Port Douglas) and Cable Beach Resort (Broome). This allows entrants to extend their time away and enjoy what the local area has to offer.

A Typical Odyssey Day

A general  Odyssey day would consist of the following:

  • Breakfast from 7 - 8 am
  • Morning control section
  • Lunch 12 - 1 pm
  • Afternoon control section
  • Morning or afternoon fun activity
  • Overnight stop including dinner and an event such as a ban or quiz night

Route Instructions

Throughout each day route notes are handed out. The morning notes outline the rest of the day and provide information such as contact phone numbers, fuel stops and the day in general. Route instructions provide the details to get from point A to point B such as where to turn, severe bumps and creeks etc.

Theme and Fun Events

Each year the Odyssey has a theme such as Pirates, Tropical, Life Saving and Aliens. During each day on the event there are fun things organised generally related to the theme. These include a daily game (for points) called a 'Roadblocksuch'  as knife throwing, lassoing a horse, daily quiz or a golf putting competition to name a few.

Most evenings there is something organised such as a band, karaoke, quiz night while other nights are kept free for entrants to do there own thing. Camaraderie, team work and getting to know the other entrants is encouraged during the week.

Fundraising

The event has evolved due to fundraising and this is carried out in two forms. An initial outlay is requested prior to the event. Fundraising is then carried out along the way in the form of an auction and raffle giving entrants the flexibility to participate. The Odyssey strives to ensure that the event is foremost about enjoyment and that the visual signs of fundraising play a minor role.

Meals

All meals are pre-organised by the Odyssey committee. Meals are, where possible, catered for by community groups fundraising for local causes such as the Royal Flying Doctor, School of the Air or Parents and Children's Associations. Meal tickets are purchased prior to departure. Meal ticket includes all meals on the Odyssey as well as a the final presentation dinner and a dvd of the event. The meal ticket does not include drinks.

Camping/Accommodation

The overnight stops on the Odyssey are either on private property or at a location with few facilities. Accommodation is normally limited and generally entrants will be required to camp. Should the overnight stop have accommodation available this information will be made available through the Odyssey bulletins and bookings are the responsibility and at the cost of the entrant.
